The nose is one of the most important factors in creating an attractive, balanced facial appearance. However, natural deformities and traumatic events can negatively affect the size and shape of the nose, causing it to make our faces less appealing. Nose surgery, technically known as “rhinoplasty,” can improve virtually any aspect of your nose and put it in better overall harmony with the rest of your face.
Nose surgery can improve the following:
- Overall nose size
- Bridge width
- Nasal profile
- Position of the nostrils
- Nasal tip
- Nasal asymmetry
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery if you:
- Are in good general health (no major health problems)
- Do not smoke
- Wish to undergo the procedure for yourself
- Have realistic expectations of the results
During your initial consultation, Dr. Barlow will personally meet with you to discuss your desires for the procedure so he can gain a thorough understanding of your goals. He will also review your medical history and any current medications you are taking. Dr. Barlow will then perform a physical examination of your nose before he explains the procedure, where your incisions will be made, and the results you can expect.
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes about three to five hours to complete. After general anesthesia is administered to eliminate patient discomfort throughout the procedure, incisions are made either inside the nose (closed technique) or along the columella on the underside of the nose (open technique). Once the necessary changes are made, the underlying tissues of the nose are repositioned, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Bandages will be placed over the incisions immediately after the procedure. Cold compression and head elevation are highly recommended to reduce swelling. Medication will be prescribed to alleviate any pain that exists over the next few days. Patients usually feel good enough to return to work and resume their daily routine about a week after surgery.
Patients are typically very satisfied with the results of their procedure as they notice their more proportionate and attractive nose becoming more apparent over the coming weeks and months. The results of rhinoplasty are meant to be permanent as your face continues to age naturally.
