A defined, prominent chin can help create a distinct jawline and balance your facial features. Men and women with receding chins might find that their chin detracts from their overall facial harmony. Weak chins can occur naturally or be the result of age-related volume loss. Chin augmentation restores youthful facial contours and brings balance to your facial appearance. Creating a better-proportioned face can enhance your appearance and help you gain more confidence.

Ideal candidates for chin augmentation surgery are in good general health and have realistic expectations about their results. Patients seeking chin augmentation often desire to improve or reconstruct their facial contours for a rejuvenated appearance. If you are considering chin augmentation surgery, you may identify with one or more of the following:
  • A weak or receding chin that lacks an attractive projection
  • Facial asymmetry caused by deficiencies in the chin
  • A lack of confidence in your facial appearance

Chin Augmentation Procedure

During your initial consultation, Dr. Barlow will evaluate your features and goals to help you decide on the best implant for your procedure. A wide variety of implant shapes and materials are offered to help create a customized implant that best suits your facial features. A small incision is placed under the chin which will help mask any scarring that may develop. The implant is inserted through the incision and placed under the muscle into a pocket made of facial tissue. The incision is closed using sutures and covered with a bandage.

Recovery and Results

You will likely experience some bruising, swelling, and redness after the procedure. Mild to moderate discomfort may last for one to two days following your surgery. You may be restricted to a liquid diet for several days to minimize the use of the jaw during the initial healing period. You should rest with your head elevated and avoid major physical activities. You can return to work within a week and resume your normal exercise routine within four weeks. After four to six weeks, most major swelling should subside, and your final results will be visible. It is important to follow your aftercare and cleaning instructions carefully and thoroughly. While not common, an infection can develop that would require immediate implant removal. You should contact your surgeon immediately if you think an infection has developed. The results of your chin augmentation should provide long-lasting enhancement to your facial features. Minimal scarring may develop under your chin but will be inconspicuous and fade over time. "The best thing about the surgery for me was how comforting Dr. Barlow was. Getting any surgery is always nerve wracking, but anytime Dr. Barlow came in the room and would begin talking ”all of my fears would go away."
